Nunavut is both the least populous and the largest in area of Canada's provinces and territories. One of the world's most remote, sparsely settled regions, it has a population of 31,906, [1] mostly Inuit , spread over an area of just over 1,750,000 km 2 (680,000 sq mi), the size of Western Europe . Nunavut is also home to the world's northernmost permanently inhabited place, Alert . On April 1, 1999 Nunavut came into existence.

Twice rerouted flight has fuel emergency NUNAVUT NEWS/NORTH - A Canadian North flight from Iqaluit to Iglulik almost ran out of fuel, with the crew declaring a fuel emergency after being rerouted twice due to deteriorating weather on Nov. 30. After encountering heavy fog in Iglulik, the crew turned to Hall Beach. Unable to land there, the plane was rerouted to Cape Dorset, where freezing rain made landing impossible. The crew decided to return to the capital.
