Every autumn, nature puts on a brilliant show of color in many parts of the United States. From bright yellows to vibrant reds, the leaves transform, showing their rich and vibrant hues. From the Northeast United States, to the Southeast and Midwest United States, the foliage season begins in early September in the northern regions and ends in southern locations in November.

Vermont’s fall foliage season begins in the northern part of the state and works its way south, the tree colors will turn for several glorious weeks throughout September and October.

A leaf is an organ of a vascular plant and is the principal lateral appendage of the stem. [1] The leaves and stem together form the shoot . [2] Leaves are collectively referred to as foliage, as in "autumn foliage." [3] [4]

For early foliage, northeastern Vermont is obviously the best and prices for accommodation are usually less than in the south. As the colors unfold, we will be displaying a weekly foliage map that more closely depicts where the best foliage is for a particular week.

The 2016 fall foliage reporting season is complete. Don't forget to submit your foliage photos from this year! Look for us again in early September 2017. For more information throughout the year, contact [email protected] or for travel information call the Maine Office of Tourism at 1-888-624-6345. Until then, enjoy the seasons and the reasons we love Maine!
